Betas can be extremely difficult to play, especially if you plan to do a clean install before moving things forward. But if you don’t want to, you’ll be happy to know that you can download and install beta versions of iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 over the air, without even losing your files and settings.
Make sure you have a compatible iPhone or iPad on which you will be installing the new beta. There’s no point in trying hard if your device isn’t officially supported. Check the list here for more details:
Keep in mind that to access the beta, you need to join the Apple Developer Program. It costs $99 and it’s absolutely not free. However, if you have patience, the update will soon be available to the public to test, completely free of charge. Those who lack patience can keep reading to learn more.
While a live install will keep your files and settings intact, we strongly recommend that you save everything to a safe and secure location, as the chances of something going wrong are pretty high with the first beta. You can back up your data using iTunes, Finder, or iCloud.
Once you confirm that the beta is working on your device and everything is backed up, this is the part where we tell you that any beta is unstable software and you will experience myriad issues including poor battery life. battery, app crashes and tons of UI issues. If you are okay with this, install the update at your own risk.
Step 1. Using your iPhone or iPad, log into the Apple Developer Program website. The same site you just signed up for for $99 (ouch).
Step 2. Once connected, press the Develop section.
Step 3. Now press Downloads.
Step 4. Here, locate the iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 developer beta.
Step 5. Now just download the iOS/iPadOS configuration profile directly on your device and authorize its installation.
Step 6. Restart your iPhone or iPad once prompted.
Step 7. Once your iPhone or iPad boots up, go to Settings > General > Software Update. Please make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi before downloading.
Step 8. Press Download and install.
This can all take a long time, so be patient. It is best not to handle your device during this process. Even better if you leave your device charging.
