Falcons outlast Cardinals in three grueling games – Orange Leader
BRIDGE CITY — They were able to extend it to three games, but the Bridge City Cardinals ultimately fell to the Huffman Falcons in their Class 4A Region III bidistric series at Chuck Young Field on Saturday night.
The Cardinals (19-11) showed plenty of life in Game 2 against the Falcons (20-6-1) after losing Game 1 Friday 7-0.
Bridge City hit 11 hits to claim an impressive 10-3 victory in Game 2.
However, Huffman pitcher Ramiro Meza stopped the Cardinals in Game 3, pitching a full two-hitter game while striking out six and walking two and the Falcons struck out in a pair of runs to escape with a 2 win. -0 and the victory of the series. .
The Falcon’s win offset a strong performance from Bridge City pitcher RJ Esquivel, who went 5 2/3 innings. Esquivel allowed just two hits while striking out eight and walking four before dropping 1-0 due to the pitch limit.
Huffman got one of his runs in the top of the third inning.
Jacob Eccles walked first and went second on a sacrificial bunt by Jake Moorhaj. With two out, Tyson Woodland hit a swirling fly ball to left field that was misjudged and Ecceles was able to score.
Controversy erupted in the bottom of the sixth when Cardinal JS Bearden hit what appeared to be a two-out solo home run through the left-field foul post to tie the game. It was first ruled a home run by the officials but later they decided to have a conference call and ruled it to be a foul ball and dismissed the original call as the Bridge City crowd weren’t too happy about it.
The Falcons added some confidence in the top of the seventh when Moorhaj and Tyler Wilkins backed up on backsteps and then advanced through wild terrain. Chance Partain drove Moorhaj in with a sacrifice fly on the right.
The Cardinals received a great performance from Landon Reeves in Game 2. Reeves went 6 2/3 innings, allowing just three hits while stoking four and walking two.
The Cardinals got to starter Falcon Partain early on as he allowed seven hits in three innings of work.
After receiving hits from John Van Huis and Justin Abate in the top of the first, the Cardinals ended up loading the bases and Ethan Oceguera started a run with a base-loaded walk.
Bridge City hit for three runs early in the second.
Draven Marlow threw a first infield single and Van Huis reached it after being drilled by a pitch. Abate made the Falcons pay when he broke an offer from Partain with a three-run homer off the left field wall to put it up 4-0.
The Falcons shot to 4-3 late in the second after a two-run single from Moorhaj at center and a Wilkins RBI single at left.
Bearden gave the Cardinals a 6-3 lead in the top of the third with a two-run brace on the right.
Bearden was also unsuccessful as he netted a two-run double in the top of the seventh and Aiydan Mulhollan also netted a two-run double into the frame to help ice him.
Huffman will face El Campo in the regional round next week.
