Games Workshop donates an additional £500,000 to ERP project • The Register

UK tabletop wargaming specialist Games Workshop has released the latest chapter in the long saga of how the mighty warriors of computing valiantly fought the uncompromising forces of ERP.

The Nottingham-based company behind the war hammer figures have been locking horns with his gigantic adversary since at least 2017, according to reports at the time [PDF].

But in its latest half-year results [PDF] in the six months to November 28, 2021, the retailer and manufacturer admitted to spending an additional £500,000 on the project, with no end in sight.

“We have made good progress in implementing our European ERP system and are working hard to help deliver this long and complex project with £0.5m incurred over the period,” the report said.

According to the company’s annual report for 2018-19 [PDF]the shift to a “more agile methodology” was intended to ensure the project’s commissioning in 2020.

Not only does the IT team have to take on the monstrous ERP project, but they also have to do it with a sword above their head.

The latest results indicate: “With a number of significant business projects underway, all of which rely on IT support, there is a need to have a strong IT strategy that allows us to deliver key strategic projects as well as support day-to-day operations. . . We are keeping our global IT team structure under review to ensure that the company’s IT support needs can be met.”

The board approved the first phase of the online store upgrade, which was delayed in September last year because the ERP project missed its milestones. He expects a capital investment of £6 million in the upgrade.

In its 2020/2021 annual report [PDF]Games Workshop admitted that its website “looked a bit dated and back-end systems sometimes couldn’t keep up with current volumes”.

“The complexity of our ERP upgrade delayed the start of an upgrade project for our digital offering, which includes content customization and improved navigation, by about a year. We are currently in the framing phase. Early concepts look amazing. be another major IT-supported project, so we will appropriately resource it with third-party expertise,” the report said.

Games Workshop is moving from Sage to a Microsoft Dynamics ERP system. In January 2021, news came that the project had parted ways with its trusty ally – sorry, implementation partner – later revealed to be DXC Technology.

In terms of asset investment, the ERP project required £1.1 million during the year, in addition to £2.3 million for a new warehouse.

The delay also caught the attention of the board. The Board of Directors is “informed monthly of major investments and ongoing relationships with key vendors as required, including over the past 12 months with respect to the ongoing ERP implementation project” , says the report.

Not that his exhausting ERP saga seems to have shaken the company’s financial situation. The latest figures show revenue hit £191.5m in the six months to November 28, 2021, compared to £186.8m in the same period a year earlier. Meanwhile, profit before tax fell to £88.2m from £91.6m. ®
