How to change your Slack’s default download location

Want to upload and organize your Slack files somewhere other than the default location? Here’s how.

For teams using Slack, it can be a breath of fresh air to never have to open emails so often. However, this does not mean that Slack is a perfect tool without problems.

Unlike email, finding documents across multiple channels in Slack can be tricky. Additionally, Slack automatically downloads documents to the same folder as your default browsers. Here’s why you should consider changing it.

Why you should change your Slack uploads folder

While many companies offer work laptops, not all do, especially for freelancers. Because of this, it becomes difficult to draw boundaries between your personal life and your work.

Luckily, there are plenty of ways to have better limits with Slack. For example, you can change your email on Slack to a designated work email or turn to snooze your alerts outside of working hours.

Another way is to make sure you don’t have to look at work-related documents when you’re on leave. However, if you’re the type to upload multiple things at once, it can be difficult to sift through your documents. With this, it is important to make an effort to avoid having all your files, documents and photos.

By editing your Slack downloads folder, you can ensure that all your work-related files are safely stored in the right place.

How to configure Slack to save downloads to another folder

Unfortunately, this feature does not work on Slack for web browsers. If you want to set your Slack downloads to save to a specific folder on your computer, here’s how you can do that on the Slack desktop app.

  1. Open your Slack desktop app.
  2. In the upper right corner of the screen, click your show picture.
  3. Select Preferences.
  4. Click on Advanced.
  5. Under Download location, click To change.
  6. Select the folder where you prefer to save your Slack file downloads instead.

If you’re in the mood to organize your Slack account, you can also make the most of it by maximizing your settings, organizing your channels, and leaving unused workspaces.

Keep your Slack uploads organized

Of course, it can be easy to just let Slack save files to the same folder as everything else on your computer. However, taking the time to organize your Slack documents encourages better boundaries with yourself. It helps keep your files easy to access if you need to find a file quickly.
