How to Download ‘Overwatch 2’ for Free on All Platforms
Update: If you’ve played Overwatch on PC before, or played on console between June 9, 2021 and today, you will no longer need to add a phone number to your account to play Overwatch 2 . More details:
The original story follows:
In case you missed the memo, Monitor 2 is now online! If you weren’t able to pre-download the game (new players had to wait for launch anyway), here’s how to install it on PC and consoles.
If you still have Monitoring 1 on your system, Monitor 2 will install itself if automatic updates are enabled. Otherwise, go to Surveillance game tile on your console or the Surveillance on Battle.net, open the options menu and select “Check for Updates” (language may be slightly different depending on platform).
No matter what platform you want to play on, you’ll need a Battle.net account. You can create one here if you need to. You will need to include a valid mobile phone number on your account to play Overwatch 2. More details on this here:
Console players will need to link their PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo account to Battle.net. You can do this either in-game after downloading it or on the web. Blizzard has a helpful support article that explains the process.
This is important, because several people have asked me the question. You don’t need to buy the $40 Monitor 2 Watchpoint Pack to play the game. Monitor 2 is free.
The Watchpoint Bundle includes access to the Season 1 Premium Battle Pass (worth $10), seven Legendary skins (including two new Space Raider skins), five Epic skins, 2,000 Overwatch Coins (worth of $20) and a Monitor 2 Player icon.
Download ‘Overwatch 2’ on PC
Before installing Monitor 2, be sure to check the system specifications to make sure your PC is compatible. Find them here:
- If you haven’t already, download the Battle.net launcher from the Blizzard website. This link should start the download.
- Follow the steps to install the launcher.
- Log in with your Battle.net credentials.
- Go to the Monitor 2 page.
- Click install.
Monitor 2 is about a 50 GB download on PC. To optimize download speed, click the Battle.net icon at the top left of the launcher, then select Settings. In the Downloads tab, make sure to uncheck the box for the “Limit Download Bandwidth” option. It’s probably a good idea to make sure no one else on your WiFi is calling Zoom before doing so.
On consoles, Monitor 2 is about a 30 GB download.

Hey, wait a second! There is a platform that I might have overlooked.
Download ‘Overwatch 2’ on Steam Deck
I can’t wait for my Steam Deck to appear. You can bet the first thing I do with it (after a round or two of vampire survivors) is to install Monitor 2. I obviously haven’t been able to personally install the game on the Steam Deck yet, so I can’t walk you through the process.
However, another reporter was able to set up the game on his Steam Deck. While this YouTube video they viewed focuses on Monitoring 1 installation, you should be able to follow the same process to get Monitor 2 on your Steam Deck. Hope that helps!
