Netflix is currently developing 55 games

Netflix’s relatively new games section launched in late 2021, and in 2022 the company expanded its library with games – some of them quite impressive, like the mobile port of Into The Breach Advanced Edition. But it looks like the company doesn’t just want ports, but also wants to develop original games.

According to Netflix’s third-quarter investor letter and a TechCrunch Disrupt event, the company has 55 games currently in development. Some of them are based on Netflix’s existing IP addresses, and Netflix is looking to draw attention between media formats. An example cited by Netflix is the synergy between Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Cyberpunk 2077, as the anime brought viewers-turned-gamers to CD Projekt Red’s other games.

Netflix says it’s seeing “encouraging signs of gameplay leading to greater retention.” Although in August 2022, a report revealed that less than 1% of Netflix subscribers actually ventured into the gaming section.

Developing original games means that Netflix is also opening and acquiring studios. Chacko Sonny, who worked on both Overwatch and God of War, is about to open a new studio under Netflix. The games Sonny is spearheading are currently unknown. Netflix also recently purchased Oxenfree devs Night School Studios and currently has five in-house studios in total.

Netflix also said it was “very seriously considering” a cloud gaming service, something like the now-defunct Amazon Luna and Google Stadia.
