Rockstar Games Believes in Single Player, Says Take-Two Boss
Grand Theft Auto fans have criticized Rockstar Games for not releasing much additional single-player content for GTA V, instead focusing on growing GTA Online. While it’s true that Rockstar has been more focused on GTA Online – which has received over 40 updates since launch – the studio remains committed to creating single-player experiences. That’s according to Strauss Zelnick, the head of parent company Rockstar Take-Two.
During Take-Two’s latest earnings briefing, Zelnick said his company never believed that single-player games/experiences would go away. In Zelnick’s opinion, he sees plenty of room for Rockstar’s single-player and multiplayer experiences in the future.
“Il fut un temps où quelques-uns de nos concurrents prenaient la position que le mode solo était mort. Nous n’avons jamais pris cette position. Nous savons qu’il y a un rôle pour un mode solo. Je pense qu’il y aura un rôle à l’avenir, “, a déclaré Zelnick.
“Ensuite, il y a certains jeux qui ne sont censés être que des expériences multijoueurs. Rockstar est connu pour la narration, et oui, Rockstar est également connu pour ces fantastiques mondes ouverts. [multiplayer] experiences,” he added. “They clearly do both very well.”
Zelnick cited GTA Online’s newest expansion, The Contract, as proof of this. “Consumers are really excited about Rockstar’s storytelling ability, and at the same time we had a great quarter with Grand Theft Auto Online. So there’s a lot of excitement there. So the answer is sort of all of the above,” Zelnick said.
GTA Online’s The Contract expansion added brand new story content, with players taking the place of Franklin from the main campaign. Some wonder if similar character-focused expansions could be coming for GTA V’s other main characters, Trevor and Michael, but as of now, no announcements have been made.
GTA V has sold 160 million copies, and the game is set to get even bigger when it hits PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in March. Beyond that, Rockstar recently confirmed that they are now well advanced in developing the next GTA game.
