Unable to download iTunes for Windows? Here are 8 fixes

If you’re here, you’re probably an Apple device owner with a Windows PC, wanting to download iTunes to do things like syncing content, backing up your Apple device, and more. However, if you are prompted to download iTunes from the Microsoft Store, but the download fails, what do you do next?

Let’s look at the various solutions you can try to be able to download iTunes successfully on your Windows PC.

1. Check your internet connection

To download iTunes, your computer must be online. To see if your PC is connected to the Internet, check the Wireless icon on your Windows taskbar.

Sometimes, if the Wi-Fi signal is weak, the internet connection may drop out randomly. You may also experience limited connectivity issues. In such cases, the Wi-Fi icon will display as an empty globe or contain a yellow warning sign.

If you can’t connect to a Wi-Fi network, an alternative is to use your smartphone as a mobile hotspot. This way, you can continue to access the Internet on your computer and download iTunes, especially if your mobile Internet speed is fast enough.

2. Login as Windows Administrator

An administrator is the assigned user who is authorized to make changes on a particular computer. These changes include the installation of software like iTunes.

If you are using a work, school, or library computer, it is best that you contact appropriate personnel at your organization to download iTunes.

If this is your personal computer, chances are you are already logged in as an administrator. Indeed, by default, the first account created when installing Windows on a PC is an administrator account.

Before moving on to other solutions, you can verify that you are logged into an administrator account by following these steps:

  1. Go to the Control Panel. Select User accounts.
  2. Under the user’s account name, you will see Administrator as one of the points listed.

If you’re not an administrator, see our guide to the Windows administrator account to learn more.

3. Update the Microsoft Store

Software updates often contain bug fixes and features that improve performance. To resolve download issues, you may need to update the Microsoft Store on your computer if you haven’t.

To update the Microsoft Store in Windows 10, follow these steps:

  1. In the Microsoft Storeselect the After icon (three dots).
  2. Picking out Download and updates.
  3. Click on Get updates.

Here’s how to do it in Windows 11:

  1. In the Microsoft Storeselect Library.
  2. Click on Get updates.

If there is an update from the Microsoft Store, it will automatically install on your computer.

4. Restart your computer

Sometimes you find that the Bluetooth icon suddenly disappears in Windows. Or the Internet connection is not working on your PC, while it works for everyone.

For a myriad of computer issues, rebooting your device brings it back to like-new condition and fixes technical issues. It’s best to reboot if you just updated the Microsoft Store as well. Then try downloading iTunes again.

5. Download iTunes from Apple website

If you’ve already updated the Microsoft Store but still can’t download iTunes, you can use another source: go to Apple’s website and download iTunes from there.

On the webpage, you can identify the latest version of iTunes by looking at its date. Then make sure to select the one with your computer’s operating system, which in your case is 32-bit or 64-bit Windows.

We have a guide to help you check if you have 32-bit or 64-bit Windows so you can download the correct iTunes software.

After installation, if you receive an iTunes error message that video playback is not supported on your computer, you will need to download the old version of iTunes (which contains the statement: for older video cards) from the website instead.

6. Temporarily Disable Security and Antivirus Software

Security and antivirus software sometimes prevents you from downloading otherwise reliable apps. If you download iTunes from official sources like Apple website or Microsoft Store, you can try temporarily disabling your antivirus to download iTunes.

Whether it’s Kaspersky, Norton or another antivirus you’re using, just go to the settings section of the software to disable it for a while. If you’re using built-in Windows Defender, you can check out our guide on how to disable Windows Defender.

7. Update Windows

Random but repeated crashes and glitches on your computer can often be fixed by updating Windows. This includes the recurring download issues you face. Also, since you download applications online, it is advisable to update Windows to have the latest updates and security patches.

We have an article that covers everything you need to know to manage your Windows updates.

8. Uninstall previous or existing version of iTunes

One potential reason why you are unable to download iTunes is that you already have files from it on your computer. Therefore, you will need to remove iTunes and all related software components before you can download it again.

Go to the Control Panel and select Uninstall a program to delete them. To avoid problems, Apple points out that you should uninstall programs from your computer in the following order:

  1. itunes
  2. Apple software update
  3. Support for Apple mobile devices
  4. Hello
  5. Support for 32-bit Apple apps
  6. Support for 64-bit Apple apps

This should delete all associated files. But for further confirmation go to Program files, Program files (x86)and the Apple folder in Common files. If you see the files below in these folders, delete them:

  • itunes
  • Hello
  • iPod
  • Mobile device support
  • Support for Apple apps
  • CoreFP

Then permanently delete them from your Basket. Once you have done this, you can download iTunes again on your PC.
